Call Me by Your Name
Synopsis
In 1980s Italy, romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old student and the older man hired as his father's research assistant.
Our Review
Luca Guadagnino's sun-drenched romance is a film of extraordinary emotional intelligence. Set in the Italian countryside during the summer of 1983, it captures the ache of first love with astonishing tenderness.
Performances That Linger
Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer have an ease and intimacy that feels stolen from real life. But it's Michael Stuhlbarg's monologue to his son near the end - about embracing pain rather than numbing yourself to it - that elevates the film into something genuinely profound.
Sufjan Stevens' original songs, particularly "Visions of Gideon" over the final shot, are as much a part of the storytelling as any performance. The peach scene has become iconic for a reason - it's strange, funny, and heartbreakingly honest.
Verdict
A film that stays with you. One of the great romance films of the decade.
