Olympics 2028: Los Angeles Introduces AI-Powered Athlete Performance Tracking
The organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has announced a partnership with Intel and Alibaba to implement AI-powered real-time athlete performance tracking across all venues.
The Technology
- 3D Athlete Tracking: Computer vision analyzes 200+ body points at 120fps
- Real-time Biomechanics: Joint angles, force vectors, and movement efficiency displayed live
- Speed & Distance: GPS-free positional tracking accurate to 1cm
- Comparative Analysis: Real-time comparison with world records and personal bests
Viewer Experience
For the first time, TV viewers and streaming audiences will see real-time overlays showing:
- Sprint velocity and acceleration curves during track events
- Swimming stroke efficiency and underwater dynamics
- Gymnastics rotation speeds and landing force analysis
- Team sport heat maps and tactical pattern recognition
Technical Infrastructure
The system requires over 15,000 cameras across venues, connected to an edge computing network capable of processing 100 terabytes of visual data per day. Machine learning models were trained on millions of hours of athletic footage.
"We want to help fans understand the incredible precision and skill of Olympic athletes. When a sprinter wins by 0.01 seconds, our technology will show exactly why," said the project's technical director.
